Level IV Helmets: The invincible Ballistic helmets?

Before you get your hopes high thinking that there is an omnipotent ballistic helmet that can keep you safe from any and every kind of ballistic attack, you must understand that these helmets are not really in use. We all want a ballistic helmet with a Level IV rating that has rifle resistant qualities. But, the major issue with this is the weight.

Take the Level IV body armor for an example. They offer high level protection against rifle rounds, large projectile shots, as well as other lesser threats. However, they are heavy. Much heavier than the regular body armor or bullet proof vests.

The same goes for the Level IV ballistic helmets. It was not until recently that new technologies where incorporated into the manufacturing of ballistic helmets. For instance, Ceradyne used to manufacture .50 BMG plates back in the 80s.

When it comes to increasing ballistic resistance, the higher the NIJ rating, the bulkier the helmet is likely to be. Advanced helmets like this require more fibers, metals, or ceramic based armory. Even with high-tech ballistic-rated fiber materials, some Level IV ballistic helmets are still average around 7 to 15 lbs in weight.

However, some manufacturers seem to be making notable progress in the area of finding a light weighted rifle-rated material for creating Level IV ballistic helmet. A helmet of such standard would have to be tested to stop .30 cal steel core armor piercing rifle ammunition.

When it comes to protecting the head against rifle shot, there is almost nothing that can prevent a heavy hit or a grave injury. In fact, a rifle shot from a distance can kill a person. Even without penetration from the bullet. It all boils down to the fact that no ballistic helmet or gear can make you totally invisible from a bullet. Not even a Level IV rated helmet.
